When we think of surfing, we relate our thoughts to Hawaii. Actually, for the Ancient Hawaiian culture, surfing or “he’e nalu”, was like a religion. Their Ancient Priests were praying for good waves. First it was a kind of training exercise, but it could also serve as a competition, in which conflicts were resolved. In the 20th century, surfing is gaining more and more popularity. This culture of surfing is spreading through the Californian Coast, Ireland and even Australia. The first Surf Competition took place in 1928. By that time there weren’t many surfers.
The major growth in surf culture was in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then it became very popular, and surfers are known for their enthusiasm and their continuous search for great waves. Yes, it became a great culture and a still growing industry. The most important thing to a surfer is having a great board. At first, boards were solid wooden planks, but the modern surfboard is made of polyurethane foam, fiberglass cloth and polyester resin. There is also the new epoxy surfboard, stronger and lighter than the traditional fiberglass.
Another specific feature of surf culture is fashion wear. Surfwear and surf clothing transformed a necessity into a fashion style. Surfers have to look cool, don’t they? Surf wear Industry became larger due to the increasing number of female surfers all around the world. Quicksilver, the world’s larger manufacturer of surf wear, founded in Australia is now US-owned; Roxy, specialized on women clothes, is a Quicksilver brand of clothing and accessories; Da Kine, an US company, they are also specialized in sports equipment; Town & Country, US surfboard manufacturer, surfwear and accessories. An essential article of Surfwear and surf clothing is the wetsuit. First created in 1950s the wetsuit is a tight-fitting outfit made of neoprene. Also important for surfers are board-shorts, which are used in warmer conditions. Board-shorts are also successfully worn by outside surfing community. There is a wide variety of clothes and accessories you can find in specialized shops. Surf style is casual, youth related and wave inspired! Men’s section is providing clothes like: T-shirts, shirts, hoodies, jackets, trousers, shorts&bordies. Separately we find a section for footwear, including sandals and flip-flaps, socks underwear. Designers are in a continuous competition in creating new types of surf wear, but also accessories, like bags, watches, sunglasses, hats and gloves and many more. The swimwear is fantastic. They have well-shaped collections to choose from. Tops and T-shirts are also interesting, with modern design and beautiful colors. Women also have their shorts and bodies and cool trousers. Skirts and dresses in the surf style are becoming more popular even outside the surfing area. Of course the Women accessories section of surf wear is wider than that for men.
Children are not forgotten, and besides clothes, we find magazines, surf books and surf games waterproof equipment or beach accessories. Surf is a sport of intense excitement, a sport that continues to evolve every day, and attract more people from all walks of life. Surfing has created a new Ocean Life Style, which includes clothing, music, and movies. The enthusiasm of surfers remains the main characteristic of this great culture!
