As a teenager you start learning more and more things about adult’s life, and you go through a lot of physical, emotional or social changes. You are dealing with your own energy that sometimes seems to be overwhelming and you have to put up with adult’s reactions to your actions or feelings. What you have to understand is that these are wonderful years you will remember, years that have a great impact in your formation as an adult.
First you should have a positive opinion of yourself. It is normal to feel anxious or stressed sometimes, but when you have your self-confidence and try to think positively, you’ll measure your abilities more accurately and will fight problems in a better way. So this might be our first advice for teen health: Believe in self-confidence, this will make you feel good about yourself and deal better with stress or any other social situations. A positive mind can help you face a major choice: your health.
Improving your health also includes: Good eating! They say, “You are what you eat”! It is so true! Your body requires over 40 fundamental nutrients to maintain good health. To get all these nutrients it is best to eat a variety of foods from all food groups. Eating this way you will get more of the vitamins, minerals and other substances your body needs. Remember to eat more fruits and vegetables, and never skip breakfast – is it your morning loading for the day. Cereals with milk and fruit can be a good choice. Consider a snack to be a fruit, fruit-juice, or yogurt and forget about junk food. It is very important to reduce fats, oils and high sugar concentration foods like candy, syrups or soft drinks. A healthy diet includes breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meat/poultry/fish, low fat milk and cheeses. This diet will provide you proteins, vitamins and minerals your body needs. Therefore, a good advice for teen health is to start eating well, make small changes in your eating habits and you will feel better.
Another important aspect in feeling better and stronger, more confident in your capacities is your Physical Activity. Physical education is mainly related to your body (including a harmonious growth, an improved core-resistance to physical effort etc.), and takes part in intellectual development, memory and creativity. You have to admit it is a pleasant activity of your free time. The most important thing would be to make a habit in practicing physical exercises about 30 minutes a day. You can start slowly, beginning with a ride on a bicycle, taking a long walk or even start basic physical exercises at home. Being a very important social activity, sport is helping you feel more responsible in relation to other persons and yourself. More and more teenagers are practicing a so-called rhythm based sport: aerobics, dancing, spinning… It helps improving, in a harmonious way, your body-attitude.
Practicing sport on a regular basis becomes a beneficial activity, helping you reduce weight or avoid obesity. Here is another aspect regarding Teen Health Education: acknowledging the health risks, you are confronting every day. The most common example is Smoking and Teenagers: even though you know it is bad for you, you are tempted to smoke. When, as a teenager, you are thinking about the health effects of smoking you see it so far in the future that you choose to ignore them. Fortunately, nowadays there are so many ways in being helped in all the aspects of your teen life, starting from specialists in schools to Internet sites where you can find the answers to your questions. Of course, family plays the most important role in this matter and parents can really help a child in making good choices. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that it is mainly your responsibility to decide your own future. All advise for teen health discussed here are actually interconnected. They are parts of an Educational system that’s becoming more and more effective in helping teenagers. It is all about information, and also about communicating with people close to you, whether it’s a parent, a friend or a teacher.
