A significant public health issues for older people is depression. Geriatric depression is one of the most common mental disorders experienced by elders, but fortunately, it can be treated with different kind of medicines. Depression tends to be periodical disorder, and this could be that many older people will have experienced it and will be at increased risk. Not all older people who have depression experience these symptoms.

Geriatric depression is characterized by persistent sad or anxious moods, pessimism, worthlessness, helplessness, loss of pleasure in any activities that once enjoyed insomnia, thoughts of death or suicide, weight loss or weight gain, and the list could go on. Depression among old persons will continue to be a subject of much scientific and applied interest in the years to come.
