An audio technician is responsible for everything involving audio and sound. Audio technicians are needed on movie sets, recordings and even live concerts. They make sure that everything that occurs on stage, at the studio or on set is clearly heard and understood by public. They also assist in stage setup as well as the sound check prior to each moment that is recorded. The main goals of the audio technicians are to provide support for those on stage, on sets or in the recording studio and to clearly reproduce the moments the artists make. As well as that, many audio technicians are needed for producing in – house programming. An audio technician is responsible for monitoring the pitch and volume in all dialogues between the actors, or during concerts or recordings. They also add sound effects where needed and synchronize the microphones that are used in production.

People may think that audio technology cannot get any better and that it is very advanced. However, any goals audio technician will disagree, saying that current technology is still in an infant form. Their goal is to make sound better and better, until it will render sounds at an extremely high fidelity. Improving sound technology can be done, starting with the bit rate at which music is recorded and played. The current binary setup may seem like it creates flawless sound, but packing more 1’s and 0’s into smaller spaces will improve what we think is sound perfection. For instance, it is known that transferring a CD into an MP3 format results in a substantial loss of sound quality due to compression. The audio technician’s goal is to find a way to transfer the sound in a manner that losses less sound. Important progress has already been made, but still there is more to come.

Usually, goals audio technicians operate technical equipment to record, enhance, amplify, mix or reproduce sound in support of performing arts, and may also assemble and maintain sound equipment; they can work in television, recording studios and radio, or maybe in theatres and other live performances places. They may also work in retail businesses trading in recording and public address equipment or in sound reproduction. Audio technicians may even specialize in maintaining and operating sound equipment. The duties and tasks of audio technicians are to determine sound requirements and to monitor audio signals to detect malfunctions or quality deviations. They set up, test and operate the equipment in accordance with the acoustics of the area and they also select, place and adjust the microphones.

Building and installing sound systems, dubbing and editing tapes and talking with performers and instructing them on microphone use are also some of their attributions. They can also service, maintain and repair receivers, tuners, amplifiers, speaker systems, reel – to – reel and cassette – type tape recorders, digital audio systems, turntables and pick – ups. Regardless of what they do, in order to reach their goals audio technicians must have a good ear for details in all area of sound. As well as that, they are required to be fast learners, be able to work under pressure and have the aptitude to work with computers.
