How does stress affect health?


Stress can be defined as one of the most negative factors that affect our health every day, both physically and mentally. But stress can be useful as well, and we can also say that stress is part of our life, and our body is designed to experience stress. As we know stress can be positive and keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger, or can become negative when we face continuous challenges without any relaxation between them. All kind of events can happen to us and around us, when we have a dead line project and have to finish it quite quickly, or stress can be experienced from the environment, body reacts with physical, mental, and emotional responses, and the result is that our body becomes overworked and in time chronic stress can lead to a host of health problems.

How does stress affect health? There are two kind of stress the short and the long-term stress and both can have effects on our body. A negative stress reaction is called distress. This is a condition that comes when the person is in continues stress. This condition, distress, can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach and elevated blood pressure, chest pain and problems sleeping. Semitists say that stress can also bring on worsen symptoms.

Alcohol, tobacco, or drugs can be factors that become harmful for our health when are used to relieve the stress from our body. Unfortunately, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state. Over the years the human species learned to become tune with the sense of dander and we were able to build up sufficient adrenaline to fight off any kind of danger. So, it all begins in our nervous system.

The adrenaline is released from the adrenal glands which are located above the kidneys and along with other hormones increase our rate of breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, this causing a badly oxygenation of the brain and letting us without enough energy to deal with the perceive threat. Once the adrenaline has been released in our body other hormones will be shut down, for example our immune system will be shut down, and the blood flow will be also reduced, which will cause skin problems.

Stress can be a big factor in depression, even if it can be reduced with medicines it’s much better to go to the root cause of how does stress affect health that leads to depression. Stress may cause also ulcers, this could be the first sign that we are too stressed; also hair loss can be a big sign of too much stress. Our immune system is stretched when our body is stressed out, and diseases like diabetes can manifest when our body is in too much stress. Anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder can be caused by stress, and the persons that are around us can notice these problems before we do. Oftentimes, reducing stress will help us reduce these disorders. Another sign of stress can be anger.


Traffic can be a temporary effect of stress on our health, and if we became more angry persons, this could well be a sign that we are under too much stress. There are many anger management courses can be useful and with the help of our family, friends or a professional anger management counselor we should be able to discover the root of anger. Weight problems such as obesity can be caused by stress. In our days many people find refuge in comfort eating to reduce they’re stress.
