Mental Health Emergency Preparation

Traumatic events usually have a huge emotional impact on the individuals, thus causing devastating effects on their mental well – being. Most people who are confronted with the aftermath of a disaster or a strong, emotional event have normal reactions as they struggle with the loss and the devastation. They often do not see themselves as needing mental health services and it is very likely they will not request these services. Outreach is often necessary to seek out and provide mental health care to the affected individuals.

It is not easy for anyone to understand and accept traumatic events. The emotional impact of things that vary from wars and terrorism to divorce and the loss of dear ones can have devastating effects on individuals of literally all ages. To some it is even easier to focus their energy and attention on the needs of other people, often to the point of neglecting themselves. Although this kind of effort deserves attention, it is very important to learn about mental health emergency preparation and remember to take care of yourself and to carefully watch your own emotions during difficult times. This way you could learn new ways to deal with the mental and emotional stress and even redirect it in positive actions. You will win by becoming stronger and being a reliable resource for family and friends during their time of struggle.

During the past years, many emergency mental health services emerged. They offer mental health emergency preparation for crisis, as well as advice for the moments after the crisis has passed. The goals of these emergency mental services are to prevent the escalations of crises, prevent individuals from doing harm to themselves or others, and relieve the immediate distress of the persons in crisis, to prepare people for mental health emergencies and to promote independence to the ones who need these kinds of services. These programs have specialized in providing crisis intervention, which means everything from stabilization and support to counseling and follow – up services. These services are both for the people who require emergency psychiatric hospitalization and their families.

Other than that, preparation for mental health emergency is very vague, because mental health can be affected by numerous factors. However, you can take a few steps when someone around you, or even yourself, is at risk of self – harming or is experiencing mental or physical deterioration.

Speaking calmly to the person who is experiencing distress can help them calm down. Expressing their fear and frustration is a positive thing that makes them realize they are not alone as they go through that experience. Try to reassure them they do not have to face the crisis alone. This often lessens the fear that surrounds the experience and its potential treatment.

If the condition worsens or does not improve, try to find someone with whom the person who is experiencing the mental health problem has a trusting relationship, and work through that person. In case even this doesn’t work, look for and call a local mental health emergency team. If there is none in the surrounding area, get help from a crisis line, a mental health centre or a family physician. Call the police as a last resort – only in case none of the above options work, or in life or death situations.
